According to experts’ estimates, considering current demand, the world coal resources will be sufficient for the next 220 years or so, whereas those of oil and gas will suffice for only approximately 40 years. A question arises what these resources can be replaced with..?

The oil crisis in 1970’s warned the world about limited natural energy sources. Today more and more frequently, a view is expressed that to exceed ecological barriers would be far more dangerous than to use the remaining sources completely, particularly if issues relating to environmental protection are not appropriately considered in global energy policies.

Power generation from renewable sources is the most dynamically developing field in world energy production. Contrary to fossil fuels, endless renewable resources renew themselves without any cost as a result of totally natural processes.

Types of renewable energy sources:

  • Wind
    • with wind turbines the wind’s kinetic energy is transformed into electric energy,

  • Water
    • energy is produced with turbines using river currents, falling water or sea waves,

  • the Sun
    • solar radiation is transformed into electric energy in solar cells and is used to heat water in special collectors,

  • Biomass
    • electric and thermal energy is produced as a result of composting energy plants, incineration materials and animal waste,

  • Geothermics
    • the use of heat coming from the inside of the Earth contained in rocks, ground water and the ground. Geothermal installations transport thermal energy to the surface of the Earth where it is used to heat households.
